Memory Spell celebrates a montage of landscapes and signage which represent moments in my timeline of discovering Long Beach: from the corner store reading magazines while doing laundry; to the spot for tacos, bands and lakers games where I used to DJ; to a recent walk to dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. My discovery of the city came in gradual steps as I moved apartments, explored neighborhoods, and continued to grow a little older.
Like these signs, I am beginning to show my age: the sun damage, the wear and tear, the ding from time to time. The composition here is of the creative, the skilled trade, the handmade and hand painted, and the uniqueness that I love about this city. To me, they represent the stages of past, present, death and future rebirth of our city.
